Bicton College firmly believes in the principle of freedom from discrimination for everyone, regardless of age, disability, ethnic or national origins, gender, sexual orientation, social or religious background, or of being part of any other group which may have experienced discrimination. Students and staff are expected to respect and recognise the worth of others. All sections of the community are welcome at the College.
You can access all of the College policies here. We are striving to bring these policies alive so that they have real meaning for the people to whom they are relevant. We are always seeking ways to constantly improve our sources of data, how we interpret them and how we use that information, to actually make a difference for the people we serve.
At Bicton College, students and staff work together through committees, working parties and special events to challenge the diverse needs of our college population for everyone who lives, studies and works here. We believe that everyone should have the best opportunity to fulfil their potential and, staff and students alike, we will always strive to make this attainable.
Bicton College is constantly developing and has recently broadened its Equality and Diversity committee to encompass a spectrum of issues affecting everyone from the start of their journey with us until they leave us. Our newly-formed S.H.E.E.P (Safety, Health, Enjoyment, Economy, Positiveness) Committee contributes to all of our learner groups, basing its aims on the Government’s objectives for'Every Child Matters' to ensure that there is the support that they need, whatever their background or their circumstances, to:
This means that we will be teaming up in new ways, sharing information and working together to protect our students from harm and help them achieve their goals in life. Young people at Bicton College will have far more say about the issues that affect them as individuals and collectively. Through our S.H.E.E.P. Committee and various other working parties, we will work collectively with our students to discover what works best for them and wherever possible change and improve accordingly.
Our Student Council, run and organised by our student president and the student course representatives, plays a crucial and active role in this. The Council allows us to hear the student voice and ensures that we are in a position where all learners feel that they have a say in ‘their’ College and an active role to play in the decision making processes.
Whilst we cannot promise to always implement every request called for, we will always give due thought and attention to each petition and, if at all possible, will do our best to carry it out. If it is not possible to carry out a request, we will always explain our reasons. The happiness, achievements and welfare of our students is at the core of all we do at Bicton College, and we consider it our duty to listen to every student voice, be it individual or collective.
