Bicton means Business

Over 1800 people flocked to Lambing Sunday at Bicton College on Mothering Sunday.
Following extensive recent publicity over a controversial LSC funding issue, the huge crowd turned out in perfect weather to enjoy the event.

Visitors enjoyed tractor and trailer rides down to the farm, where children were able to cuddle and feed the baby lambs. Seven ewes gave birth to 14 lambs during the event, according to shepherd Phil Squire, who was very pleased with the flock’s performance. He said, ‘They were obviously trying to make sure we put on a good display for the public.’

Over 8000 pounds was taken on the day, with hundreds of Bicton pork sausages, burgers and cream teas being consumed by hungry visitors.

Three couples booked up during the event to hold their weddings in the college’s beautiful Georgian mansion house. Many dogs took part in the eight class show organised by animal care students and sponsored by Now4pets. Engineering students completed a gruelling 24 hours tractor rebuild, for the Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust (BOAT) with parts sponsored by Vapormatic of Exeter.

Principal and Chief Executive David Henley said, ‘The fantastic success of our Lambing Sunday shows Bicton means business and was the perfect showcase for our many talented staff and students. We are delighted with the numbers of people who chose to visit, and all their encouraging feedback.’
