At Bicton College we offer you advice and information on how and where you can get financial support so that you can focus on your studies. There are many ways in which funding is available to you, which are often confusing and criteria often changes, but here are some of the options available to you:

Discretionary Learner Support
The purpose of this fund is to give support to students who are most in need to ensure that their studies aren’t affected by their personal circumstances. This is a means-tested fund and if you meet the criteria and adhere to the terms and conditions then you are likely to receive support within the following areas:

  • Accommodation (residential bursary)
  • Childcare (for learners aged 20+)
  • Equipment for course
  • Travel to and from College (19 years and over)


How to apply:
Fill out the application form below that applies to you and then return it to Karen Selley, Bicton College, East Budleigh, Budleigh Salterton, Devon, EX9 7BY. If successful, payments will be made after you have started your course.

Other grants to apply for:

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) EMA is a weekly payment worth up to £30 per week and is paid straight in to your bank account. You are eligible for EMA if:

  • you are aged between 16 – 18 years old
  • your annual household income is below £30,810 (for tax year 2009-10)
  • you are enrolled on to a full-time further education course at college

      Adult Learning Grant
      ALG is a weekly payment worth up to £30 per week.

      You are eligible for ALG if:

      • you are between 19-30 years old
      • you are doing your first Level 2 or Level 3 qualification
      • you are not receiving any out of work benefits

          Childcare:

          Care2Learn is help for young learners with children who need childcare provision whilst studying.           Transport:
          If you are aged 16-18 you and live in Devon* you may be eligible for subsidised transport through Devon County Council. Please apply quickly by downloading the following forms:

          More Important News for Post 16 Transport Passengers

          *if you live in Torbay or Plymouth, you will need to apply to your local authority for details of subsidised transport.

          For those learners aged 19+ who are not eligible for assistance through Devon County Council and need to use train and/or a bus to get to Bicton College, we can arrange a “sponsored seat” which, if approved, guarantees travel on a contract bus or the train in order to get you to College. Please complete the form below and return to us by 15 August 2010. If you are on a low income or a means-tested benefit, please also complete the “Funding Application Form” above. If this form is not completed, the cost of the seat will be charged to you.
