    Programme Aims

    This programme will develop your practical skills in the workplace and you will be involved in information gathering and decision making to prepare you for a supervisory role in your future career.


    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have achieved the following:

    • Initial Assessment results should show that you are working towards Level 2
    • Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry
    • A suitable work placement (we can help to find you one)

     

    In addition, it would be helpful if you have the following:

    •  GCSEs (Grades A C)or equivalents
    • A good reference

     


    Course Structure

    This course requires day or block release for one to two years depending on your experience and development. Your progress will be monitored by regular work place review visits and tutorials. Theory and practical skills will be delivered through class work and directed study, working at your own pace.

     


    What you will study

    There are a number of pathways available to complete the advanced work-based diploma. What you do will depend on your personal choice and the experience you will receive in the workplace our training officers will discuss this with both yourself and your employer.

     

    The following subjects maybe studied:

     

    Work-Based Diploma Amenity Horticulture

    •  Collecting data about sites
    •  Preparing detailed designs for landscaping
    •  Preparing and maintaining equipment and machines
    •  Preparing specifications and estimating resources required

     

    Work-Based Diploma Landscaping

    •  Constructing free-standing walls
    •  Laying hard surfaces Managing planted areas
    •  Pools and water features
    •  Preparing and applying pesticides
    •  Preparing sites for landscape construction and installation
    •  Repairing and restoring stone walls and soft landscape areas
    •  Rock gardens

     

    Work-Based Intensive Crop Production

    •  Harvesting intensive crops
    •  Nutrition and watering
    •  Pests, diseases and disorders
    •  Preparing orders
    •  Setting out crops
    •  Vegetative and seed propagation

     

    The following functional skills are studied alongside these NVQs:

    •  Application of number (Level 2)
    •  Communication (Level 2)
    •  Information Technology (Level 1)

     

    Additional qualification:

    •  First aid

     


    Assessment

    You will be assessed continuously through practical assessments at work and college-set assignments to demonstrate your knowledge. You will build a portfolio of practical competence and knowledge evidence and keep a detailed work diary.


    Progression

    Apprentices may progress to a Foundation Degree programme. Career opportunities may include: green keeper, landscaper, nursery worker, grounds person, all at supervisory level. A number of students who progressed through full-time programmes are now responsible for their own businesses.
