    Programme Aims

    This programme is aimed at enabling you to train and gain experience whilst working in the equine industry. Apprenticeships offer a good basis to a career in the equine industry. You can learn practical skills and expertise in the care, welfare and supervision of horses AND achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

     

    The Advanced Apprenticeship progresses on from the knowledge and skills already achieved from the Apprenticeship or from a comparable level of equine industry experience.


    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have achieved the following:

    •   Initial Assessment results should show that you are working towards Level 2
    •   Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry
    •   A suitable work placement (we can help to find you one)

     

    In addition, it would be helpful if you have the following:


    •   GCSEs (Grades A–C) or equivalents
    •   A good reference Proven ability and experience within the Equine industry at Level 2

     

    Any riding at the College is subject to a satisfactory riding assessment. There is a 13 stone weight limit at College. If this is a problem, the riding assessment and subsequent riding could be done at your own yard or place of employment.

     


    Course Structure

    Day release for one to two years depending on experience.

    • Design work programmes for horses
    • Exercising schooled horses to maintain training
    • Feeding
    • Health and safety
    • Horse health
    • Stable management
    • Transportation of horses
    • Technical Certificate BHS Stage 3 Knowledge and Care

    Functional skills are studied alongside this qualification to make up the full framework.


    Assessment

     

    Assessment will be carried out in the workplace and at college. It will consist of the observation of practical skills, checking written work and oral questioning.


    An Equine Training Officer will help guide and support you during your course. The officer will visit you in the work place, and will have regular contact to ensure you are progressing with your studies and skills.

     

    During your time at the College you will be trained by a team of qualified staff who are very experienced within the Equine Industry.


    Progression

    Upon successful completion, you will have the opportunity to progress to a full-time course, or work towards further British Horse Society qualifications.

    Career opportunities may include grooms, senior grooms, instructors, supervisors and yard managers. A number of past learners who progressed through full time programmes are now responsible for their own businesses.
