    Programme Aims

    This exciting, full-time programme is designed to meet the demand for employment orientated training, for those wishing to work with people within the outdoor leisure industry. The focus is on personal skills development and confidence as a leader in a range of adventurous activities.

     


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A–D, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Foundation Diploma (Grade D)
    •   GNVQ Foundation NVQ Level 1or equivalent
    •   Enthusiasm and experience in a range of outdoor activities

     

    Applicants should have reached the age of 18 during the course.



    Course Structure

    Terms 1 and 2

    The theoretical and practical elements of the course are fully integrated, which creates a diverse programme of activity. The practical nature of this course gives a real, hands-on approach to learning.


    Term 3

    For the third term, and with the help of Bicton College’s industry contacts and support from your personal tutor, you will undertake a work placement in an outdoor education centre. These placements often lead to paid employment and give you real experience to help you decide on your future career path. Past students have taught in outdoor centres all over the UK and abroad.

     


    What you will study

     

    • Planning and leading adventurous activities
    • Promoting safety in the sport and activity environment
    • Practical skill development and exploration in both water and land-based activities

     

    This will involve industry visits and the opportunity to practice your teaching skills on local school groups. As part of the programme you will also go on several expeditions away from the College to improve practical and teamwork skills (previously the Peak District, Wales and the River Exe).

    Practical Activities
    As well as the NVQ Level 2, learners will participate in the following activities and where possible have the opportunity for NGB training/assessment:

    •  High ropes
    •  Hill walking
    •  Kayaking/canoeing
    •  Mountain biking
    •  Rock climbing
    •  Sailing/power boating
    •  Surfing

    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by continuous assessment there are no exams. The NVQ Level 2 will be assessed by your competence in the working environment and the production of a portfolio of evidence.


    Progression

    Learners may progress to the Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport, or access employment as an instructor in outdoor activity centres.
