    Programme Aims

    This programme will develop your practical skills in the work place to a recognised national standard and give you the background knowledge you need to carry out those practical tasks competently.

     


    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have achieved the following:

    •   Initial Assessment results should show that you are working towards Level 1
    •   Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry
    •   A suitable work placement – we can help to find you one

     

    In addition, it would be helpful if you have the following:

    •  GCSEs (Grades A C) or equivalents
    •   A good reference

     


    Course Structure

    This course requires block day release attendance for up to two years, depending on your experience and progress. Progress will be monitored through regular work place review visits and tutorials with your personal tutor. The theory and knowledge will be delivered through classes and directed study, working at your own pace.


    What you will study

    There are a number of pathways available to complete the work-based diploma. What you do will depend on your personal choice and the experience you will receive in the workplace our training officers will discuss this with both yourself and your employer. The following subjects maybe studied:

     

    Work-Based Diploma Amenity Horticulture (Landscaping)

    •   Construction and maintenance of garden features
    •   Establishment and maintenance of plants
    •   Installation of drainage systems
    •   Operation and maintenance of equipment and machines
    •   Site and soil preparation

     

    Work-Based Diploma Amenity Horticulture (Nursery)

    •   Establishment and maintenance of plants under protection
    •   Monitoring environmental conditions
    •   Propagation and growing young plants

     

    Work-Based Diploma Production Horticulture

    •   Establishment and maintenance of crops
    •   Identification and collection of plants for dispatch Identifying and treating pests and diseases
    •   Preparing growing media Preparing sites for planting crops
    •   Propagating plants

     

    The following functional skills are studied alongside these Diplomas:

    •  Application of number (Level 1)
    •   Communication (Level 1)

     

    Additional qualification:

    •  First Aid

    Assessment

    You will build a portfolio of work-based evidence, which will include a detailed diary of work completed, assessment records of your practical skills and a workbook to demonstrate your understanding of the underpinning knowledge.  Assessment is continuous.

     


    Progression

    Apprentices can progress to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship programme. Career opportunities include landscaper, nursery worker, green keeper or grounds person.
