    Course Duration:1 Year to 18 Months


    Programme Aims

    To develop the practical expertise and background knowledge required to establish a career in the animal care industry.

    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You should also have the following:

    •   A suitable work placement - we may be able to help you find one

    •   A good reference

    •   GCSEs at grades A-C would be an advantage
    •   Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry



    Course Structure

    In addition to your agreed working hours within your placement, you will be required to attend the College for approximately five blocks of one week's duration during the academic year. This will include an induction week and attendance for assessments as necessary.

    • Zoo and wildlife establishment

    Students may specialise in the subject of their choise linked to their workplace.

    The following key skills are studied alongside this course:

    • Application of number (Level 1)
    • Communication (Level 1)
    • First Aid

    Assessment

    Assessment will normally be carried out in the workplace and will consist of the observation of practical skills, checking written work and oral questioning. A portfolio of evidence must also be produced.

    Assessment for functional skills will be through examination and the completion of a portfolio of evidence.


    Progression

    Learners may progress to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Animal Care and Management providing they hold a supervisory position, or to a full-time programme such as the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management. Opportunities are available for work in a variety of animal-based jobs such as kennels, catteries, pet shops, veterinary surgeries, rescue centres, wildlife parks and zoos.
