These two programmes provide training for those seeking careers in the agricultural, ground care and construction plant machinery industries. They aim to produce well-motivated technicians with the skills required in the sophisticated and fast changing agricultural, horticultural and construction service engineering industries.
• Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry
• A suitable work placement - we may be able to help you find one
In addition, it would be helpful if you have the following:
• GCSEs would be an advantage
• A good reference
The courses combine work-based practical sessions with college-based learning. The programmes will include servicing, repair and testing of appropriate machines, as well as essential skills such as information technology, engineering calculations and communication. The qualifications will require you to complete a portfolio of assignments and assessments completed in the work place and at college. Both courses will take approximately two years, with attendance at college for eight two-week blocks each year.
The content of each course will focus on:
• Agricultural machinery
• Brakes and steering
• Clutches and transmissions including manual, power shift and hydrostatic
• Construction Plant machinery
• Electrics and electronics
• Engines
• Ground Care machinery
• Health and safety
• Hydraulics
• Welding and fabrication
Plus functional skills at Level 1 in Application of Number, Communication and IT.
For both courses, this will consist of a combination of college and work-based practical assessments, written and oral engineering knowledge tests and essential skills assignments.
Apprentices can progress to the Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3, or to full-time study on an Extended Diploma in Land-Based Technology programme. Many apprentices gain permanent employment with engineering firms.
