    Programme Aims

    To develop the practical expertise and background knowledge required to establish a career in outdoor leisure.


    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have achieved the following:

    •   Initial Assessment results should show that you are working towards Level 1
    •   Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry
    •   A suitable work placement

     

    In addition, it would be helpful if you have the following:

    •   GCSEs (Grades A C) or equivalent
    •   A good reference

     


    Course Structure

    This Apprenticeship is based around the NVQ Level 2 qualification which covers different areas of the outdoor sports and leisure industry. Additional short courses are also included.

     

    The programme covers practical tasks at work, supported by a range of block release weeks offered during the autumn and spring terms. These blocks are usually of 3–5 days duration. In addition to the NVQ, national governing body instructor qualifications are offered to the level of skill appropriate to you as an individual. In addition to your vocational studies, functional skills are completed during the course which is essential to achieving the Apprenticeship qualification.

     

    You will be supported by regular visits from an assessor, who will come to your work place and measure your progress.

     


    What you will study

    You will be taught how to:

    •  Prepare for a session
    •  Lead a session
    •  Conclude and review a session
    •  Contribute to the work of your team
    •  Look after participants away from home
    •  Promote safety in the sport and activity environment
    •  Set up, take down and store equipment

    Functional skills are studied alongside all NVQs:


    •  Application of number (Level 1)
    •  Communication (Level 1)
    •  Information technology (Level 1)

    Practical Activities

    Learners will also participate in the following activities and where possible have the opportunity for NGB training/assessment:

    •  High ropes
    •  Hill walking
    •  Kayaking/canoeing
    •  Mountain biking
    •  Rock climbing
    •  Sailing/power boating
    •  Surfing

    Assessment

    Assessments are carried out in the workplace on a regular basis through your portfolio of evidence and during your block weeks at college.


    Progression

    Successful apprentices may progress to full time employment in the industry or continue with an Advanced Apprenticeship at NVQ Level 3.
