    Programme Aims

    The Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies (Animal Care) is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with an interest in animal care who may require some support in achieving their career aims. Learners will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in animal care alongside the more general skills required to gain employment or to continue training. Time will be split between classroom activities and practical work in the Animal Care Centre. The programme has been designed to improve literacy skills, spoken communication, numeracy, IT, problem solving and teamwork skills.

    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Entry Level 3. You will also need to demonstrate an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process and results of Initial Assessment.

    Course Structure

    Students learn through practical instruction, projects, individual and group work, lectures and portfolio building.

    What you will study

    You will be studying a range of subjects including:
    • Animal accommodation
    • Feeding and watering of animals
    • Health and wellbeing of animals
    • Industry experience / animal duties
    • Movement and handling of animals
    • Safe working practices and personal performance development

    Learners will also be taught functional skills in Maths and English.


    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by continuous assessment, using a variety of methods, including:
    • At least one supported assignment for each unit of the certificate
    • Online test
    • Practical sessions

    Progression

    Successful learners may continue on to a Level 2 programme, such as a Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care or the Level 2 Diploma in Agriculture. Alternatively, learners may wish to work towards a work-based Foundation Apprenticeship or gain employment in a relevant industry.
