    Program Aims

    The Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies (Horse Care) is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with an interest in horse care who may require support in achieving their career aims. Learners will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and practical skills in horse care alongside the more general skills required to gain employment or to continue training. Time will be split between classroom activties and practical work in the Equine yard. The programme has also been designed to improve literacy skills, spoken communication, numeracy, IT, problem solving and teamwork skills.


    Entry Requirements

    Formal qualifications are not required but you will need to demonstrate an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process and results of Initial Assessment. It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2.

    Course Structure

    Students learn through practical instruction, projects, individual and group work, lectures, portfolio building and work-based learning.

    • Feeding and watering of horses
    • Horse health
    • Horse handling and accommodation
    • Industrial experience
    • Safe and effective working practices

    Supporting Additional Qualifications (All students)

    • Functional skills in communication, numeracy and IT
    • Personal and social development

    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by continuous assessment, using a variety of methods, including:

    • At least one supported assignment for each unit of the certificate
    • Practical sessions

    Progression

    Successful learners may continue on to a Level 2 programme, such as the Diploma in Horse Care or the Diploma in Animal Care. Alternatively, learners may wish to work towards a work-based Apprenticeship or gain employment in a relevant industry.
