    Programme Aims

    Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies (Environmental Conservation) is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with an interest in the environment who may require some support in achieving their career aims. The programme encourages students to develop the abilities and personal qualities that will equip them for working life and has also been designed to improve literacy skills, spoken communication, numeracy, IT, problem solving and team work skills.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Entry Level 3. Formal qualifications are not required but you will need to demonstrate an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process.


    Course Structure

    Students learn through practical instruction, projects, individual and group work, lectures, portfolio building and work-based learning.


    What you will study

    The course may include the following modules:

    • Developing skills in land-based conservation
    • Estate skills
    • Machinery operations
    • Land and environment conservation

    You will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in IT, numeracy and literacy


    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by continuous assessment, using a variety of methods, including:

    • At least one assignment for each unit of the certificate
    • Practical skills

    Progression

    Successful students may continue to a Level 2 programme, such as the Level 2 Diploma in Countryside and the Environment, or the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care. Alternatively students may wish to work towards a work-based learning qualification.
