    Programme Aims

    This is a practical programme designed to help you develop gardening skills and give you the basic experience for a wide range of careers in amenity horticulture, landscaping and garden maintenance or garden centres.

     


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •   4 GCSEs at grades A–D, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Foundation Diploma (Grade D)
    •   GNVQ Foundation NVQ Level 1 or equivalent


    Course Structure

    Training is carried out through a mixture of theory and practical sessions, with approximately 40% of tuition taking place in the classroom and 60% making full use of the College’s mature grounds and extensive plant collections.

     

    Special Features

    All learners are allocated an area on which they will develop practical skills and cultivate a small garden.


    What you will study

    • Constructing landscape features and surfaces
    • Establishing & maintaining plants outdoors
    • Horticultural crop production outdoors
    • Introduction to land-based machinery operations or undertaking specialist land-based machinery operations
    • Participation in propagation techniques
    • Principles of amenity and sports turf maintenance

    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by a variety of assessment methods including:

    • Debates
    • Open/closed book tests
    • Practical activities
    • Presentations
    • Project work
    • Simulated work-based learning
    • Work-based learning reports
    • Written assignments
    Successful learners will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

    Progression

    Completion of this programme may enable progress to an Apprenticeship, the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture or other programmes in Horticulture. Successful completion will also open up employment opportunities in organisations such as local authorities, landscaping and garden maintenance businesses, garden centres, private gardens or self-employment.
