    Programme Aims

    This Level 2 academic and practical qualification provides a foundation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in readiness for a career in the outdoor adventure or leisure industry. The course combines theory with practical application, developing your personal activity skills, activity management and leadership attributes.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A–D, including English, Maths and Science
    • Environmental and Land-Based Studies Foundation Diploma (Grade D)
    • GNVQ Foundation NVQ Level 1or equivalent

     

    Prior experience of taking part in outdoor adventure activities is desired and a commitment to the participation in outdoor adventure activities is essential.

     


    Course Structure

    This full-time course includes classroom lectures, private study and practical sessions each week. One day each week is specifically set aside for you to develop practical and leadership skills. Practical sessions will use the excellent facilities at Bicton College and the variety of adventure locations available within the South West and further afield.

     

    As part of your course you will undertake training that runs alongside national governing body awards. One day a week is specifically available for you to undertake industry related work experience. The remainder of the programme will include offsite visits to learn about different adventure activity and leisure providers.

    Practical Activities

    Learners will also participate in the following activities and where possible have the opportunity for NGB training/assessment:

    • High ropes
    • Hill walking
    • Kayaking/canoeing
    • Mountain biking
    • Rock climbing
    • Sailing/power boating
    • Surfing

    Assessment

    Modules are continuously assessed via the submission of course work assignments.

     


    Progression

    Learners may progress on to the NVQ in Adventurous Activity Leadership, or the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. Career opportunities may include assistant instructor positions in outdoor or local authority leisure centres.
