    Programme Aims

    ‘The best part of the course is its practical side you get to climb trees and use different machinery which is all great fun and good preparation for work ahead.’

     

    The programme is designed to help learners become competent arborists whilst gaining a Level 3 qualification. At the end of the programme you should possess a thorough knowledge of the care and maintenance of trees and plantations.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A–C, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Higher Diploma (Grades A–C)
    •   GNVQ Intermediate
    •   NVQ Level 2
    •   BTEC First Diploma
    •   City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent


    Course Structure

    Study at the College involves work-related and activity-based lectures, practical training, debates, individual and group assignments. There will also be study visits to relevant sites.

    • ABC Level 2 certificate in arboriculture
    • Arboriculture 1 – tree climbing, pruning and dismantling
    • Arboriculture 2 – tree identification, planting and care
    • Ecology of trees forests and woodlands
    • Forest and woodland management
    • Forest and woodland skills
    • Functional skills (communication, numeracy, IT)
    • Investigative project
    • Measuring trees and woodlands
    • Principles of plant and soil science
    • Tree establishment and protection
    • Tree felling and chainsaw use
    • Tree surveys and reports

    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by a variety of assessment methods including:
    • ABC examinations
    • Debates
    • Practical activities
    • Presentations
    • Project work
    • Simulated work-based learning and reports
    • Written assignments

    Successful learners will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.


    Progression

    Upon completion of the programme, learners might seek employment in tree surgery, estate work or with local councils. Other opportunities may arise in farm advisory services, environmental education and in countryside contracting businesses.

     

    Successful learners may the opportunity to progress to a Foundation / Honours Degree in a related subject.
