    Programme Aims

    This programme is aimed at enabling you to train and gain experience whilst working in the equine industry. Apprenticeships offer a good basis to a career in the equine industry. You can learn practical skills and expertise in the care, welfare and supervision of horses AND achieve nationally recognised qualifications.


    Entry Requirements

    You will need to have achieved the following:

    •  Initial Assessment results should show that you are working towards Level 1
    •  Relevant work experience and knowledge of your chosen industry

    •  A suitable work placement - we can help to find you one


    In additon, it would be helpful if you have the following:
    • GCSEs (Grade A-C) or equivalent
    • A good reference

    Any riding at the College is subject to a satisfactory riding assessment.

    There is a 13 stone weight limit at College. If this is a problem, the riding assessment and subsequent riding could be done at your own yard or place of employment.

     


    Course Structure

    The Level 2 training requires some attendance at college on a programme of one-week blocks. However a day release scheme may be a possible alternative.

    What you will study

    Suggested course content (optional units are offered to suit your employment):

    • Feeding
    • Grooming, rugs and bandages
    • Health
    • Lungeing
    • Riding on the flat and over fences
    • Riding and Road Safety
    • Stable management
    • Technical Certificate BHS Stage 1 & 2 Horse Knowledge and Care OR Health and Safety with Horses


    The following functional skills are studied alongside this NVQ:

    • Application of number (Level 1)
    • Communication (Level 1)
    • First Aid
    • Working with others

    Assessment

    Assessment is normally carried out both in the workplace and at the College. It will consist of observation of practical skills, checking written work and oral questioning and riding assessments.


    An Equine Training Officer will help guide and support you during your course. The officer will visit you in the work place, and will have regular contact to ensure you are progressing with your studies and skills.

     

    During your time at college you will be trained by a team of qualified staff who are very experienced within the Equine Industry.


    Progression

    If you wish to continue working and training, you may progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care and Management or to a full time course. Alternatively, you might obtain employment in a wide range of horse-related industries.
