Level 1 Diploma in Land-Based Studies (Horticulture) is a foundation programme aimed at individuals with an interest in Horticulture who may require some support in achieving their career aims. Learners will develop the skills required to gain employment or to continue training. The programme at Bicton College includes the availability of plots dedicated to the practical work of horticultural learners. This programme has been designed to improve literacy skills, spoken communication, numeracy, IT, problem solving and teamwork skills.
It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Entry Level 3. Formal qualifications are not required but you will need to demonstrate an interest in the course and a willingness to learn. Entry will be agreed through an interview process.
Students learn through practical instruction, projects, individual and group work, lectures and portfolio building.

Learners will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in numeracy and literacy, and in personal development.

Successful learners may continue on to a Level 2 programme, such as the Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture. Alternatively students may wish to work towards a work-based learning qualification or an Apprenticeship. Learners may also wish to gain employment within the horticulture industry.
