    Programme Aims

    Considering a career in floristry? Want to take floristry more seriously? Then this is the course for you. The course is suitable for all those looking for a change in career or as natural progression from basic floristry skills.

    This course is designed to provide a strong basis of practical skills and an understanding of the principles of floristry and retailing. At the end of this course you should be equipped with the knowledge, skills and techniques to be able to cope with the everyday aspects of a floristry shop, with work experience in this area required during the duration of the course.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A–D, including English, Maths and Science
    •   GNVQ Intermediate
    •  NVQ Level 2
    •  BTEC First Diploma
    •  City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent

    Course Structure

    This course aims to prepare you for all that you may face in the everyday life of a floristry shop. The course will consist of tutor demonstrations and practical sessions.


    What you will study

    We aim to develop your design skills, inspiration, creativity and a whole range of floristry, retail and personal skills.

     

    Most lessons will include a tutor demonstration and then give you the opportunity to produce at least one practical piece. The course will also give you the opportunity to:

    • Find an outlet for your creativity
    • Get competitive, visit and enter shows, competitions and demonstrations
    • Have the opportunity to develop the key skills for life e.g. communication, computer skills and basic maths
    • Increase your knowledge and confidence in floral design
    • Investigate and explore various areas of floristry work including gift designs, funeral pieces, planted design, hand tied bouquets and wedding designs
    • Travel locally, nationally and internationally to industry events
    • Work hard and have fun
    Work experience is required during the course (options can be discussed at interview)

    Assessment

    Each unit has an assignment (practical and written work) and, at the end of the course, there is a multiple-choice test with questions relating to the 11 core units. An industry-recognised City & Guilds’ certificate is issued on successful completion. Learners achieving one or more units will receive a Certificate of Unit Credit listing the assessment components achieved.


    Progression

    Successful learners may progress to the Level 3 Diploma or the Advanced Apprenticeship in Floristry. Career opportunities include working within a floristry business, or floristry outlet, e.g. a department within a garden centre or supermarket.
