    Programme Aims

    This course provides a sound basic training in the care and management of horses. It is especially useful for the education and training of people who care for horses and are employed, or are hoping to be employed in riding stables, stud farms or livery stables.

    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 1. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science
    •  GNVQ Foundation
    •  NVQ Level 1 or equivalent

    All potential students may be required to attend work experience prior to starting the course. Acceptance will be based on satisfactory references.

    Any riding at the College is subject to a satisfactory riding assessment.


    Course Structure

    The course is designed to last for one year, providing training for those who wish to enter the horse industry, or to progress to a Level 3 programme.

    Students will learn through a combination of practical instruction, lectures and group and individual programme work.

    What you will study

    Attendance of yard duties at the Equestrian Centre will be expected in order to care for the horses.  You will carry out duties starting at 8.30am for one day each week; in addition you will carry out work expereince on one other day each week (Monday).

     

    Attendance of TEN weekend days each year will be expected in order to gain a good insight into the running of the commercial activities, events and yard management.  There will also be plenty of opportunities to compete in the equine events held here either on your own horse or one of the suitable College horses.

    Units

    • Undertake work related experience in the land based industries
    • Carry out and understand the principles of feeding and watering horses
    • Undertake routine stable duties
    • Undertake horse handling
    • Undertake horse grooming, trimming and plaiting
    • Introduction to caring for competition horses
    • Introduction to lungeing horses
    • Introduction to riding horses

       


    Assessment

    Progress is monitored by:

    • Assignments
    • Practical assessments


    Progression

    Upon successful completion, this qualification will equate to 4 GCSEs at C grade and may allow progression to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management. Successful learners may alternatively seek employment in the wide range of related businesses such as riding schools, dressage, jumping, eventing, driving and polo yards.
