    Programme Aims

    This programme is designed to provide you with the range of skills and practical qualifications needed for you to obtain employment at a supervisory level within leisure industries, or to progress to a Level 4 programme. It is equivalent to two A levels.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4 GCSEs at grades A C, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Higher Diploma (Grades A C)
    •   GNVQ Intermediate
    •   NVQ Level 2
    •   BTEC First Diploma
    •   City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent


    Course Structure

    This programme is both physically demanding and mentally stimulating and offers the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in a variety of areas. These include canoeing, kayaking, power boating, mountain leadership, first aid and many others. Learning is undertaken through a combination of lectures, discussions, visits, skills instruction and work-based learning.

     

    One day each week is specifically set aside for you to develop practical and leadership skills. Practical sessions will use the excellent facilities at Bicton College and the variety of adventure locations available within the South West and further afield.

    • Land-based leadership and skills
    • Leadership in sport
    • Outdoor and adventure expeditions
    • Principles and practice in outdoor adventure
    • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
    • The physiology of fitness
    • Water-based leadership and skills
    • Work-based experience in sport

    Practical Activities

    Learners will also participate in the following activities and where possible have the opportunity for NGB training/assessment:

    • High ropes
    • Hill walking
    • Kayaking/canoeing
    • Mountain biking
    • Rock climbing
    • Sailing/power boating
    • Surfing

    Assessment

    Assessment is through assignments and practical assessments of core subjects.

     

     


    Progression

    Successful learners may progress on to a Foundation Degree in Outdoor Adventure Management.

    Employment may typically be found in supervisory or instructional roles within the outdoor leisure industry.
