This programme is viewed by the industry as a key stage in the education and training of those seeking a management career with responsibility for a farm or agricultural unit. It combines agricultural knowledge, practical skills and management expertise.
The first year is spent developing the underpinning knowledge and practical skills needed in the day-to-day operation of livestock, crop and mechanised tasks.
The optional extra year consists of a full year of work-based learning, providing the opportunity to consolidate skills and increase awareness of farming issues and good practice.
The third year builds on the experiences of the first and second years and applies this to management concepts and decision-making within an agricultural environment.
Whilst at Bicton, learners will be able to improve their practical skills by working on the College farm.
Assessment is made on a broad range of evidence including: assignments to investigate specific topics; case studies; observation of practical skills; oral tests and short tests.
Candidates who have completed an Extended Diploma in Agriculture may progress to a Foundation or Honours Degree programme. See our Higher Education prospectus for further information on what Bicton College can offer in these areas.
Those entering the agriculture industry might, for example, work at craftsperson level or as unit supervisors, with a view to progressing to assistant managerial and ultimately managerial roles. Others may take employment with the ancillary trades, offering advice on farm supplies or on the marketing of finished produce.
