    Programme Aims

    This programme is viewed by the industry as a key stage in the education and training of those seeking a management career with responsibility for a farm or agricultural unit. It combines agricultural knowledge, practical skills and management expertise.

    The course also provides an effective vocational alternative to A levels, and will allow you to progress to higher education programmes opening up a wide range of career opportunities in agriculture and related industries.



    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •   4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental Land-Based Stuides HIgher Diploma (Grades A-C)
    •   BTEC First Diploma
    •   NVQ Level 2
    •   City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent

    Course Structure

    The first year is spent developing the underpinning knowledge and practical skills needed in the day-to-day operation of livestock, crop and mechanised tasks.

    The optional extra year consists of a full year of work-based learning, providing the opportunity to consolidate skills and increase awareness of farming issues and good practice.

    The third year builds on the experiences of the first and second years and applies this to management concepts and decision-making within an agricultural environment.

    Whilst at Bicton, learners will be able to improve their practical skills by working on the College farm.


    What you will study

    Students will study a wide range of units spanning key aspects of agriculture including:
    • Animal husbandry, production and science
    • Crop production and science
    • Environmental and conservation management
    • Farm business management
    • The maintenance and use of agricultural machinery

      Students will also study functional skills including the effective use of communication and numerical skills.

    Assessment

    Assessment is made on a broad range of evidence including: assignments to investigate specific topics; case studies; observation of practical skills; oral tests and short tests.


    Progression

    Candidates who have completed an Extended Diploma in Agriculture may progress to a Foundation or Honours Degree programme. See our Higher Education prospectus for further information on what Bicton College can offer in these areas.

    Those entering the agriculture industry might, for example, work at craftsperson level or as unit supervisors, with a view to progressing to assistant managerial and ultimately managerial roles. Others may take employment with the ancillary trades, offering advice on farm supplies or on the marketing of finished produce.
