    Programme Aims

    This full-time programme is designed to help you develop the skills needed as a practising engineer in the agricultural and associated industries, such as horticulture, fabrication, construction and 4WD vehicles. It will also provide you with an understanding of the skills needed for technical support in the engineering sector.


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are wroking towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •   4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Higher Diploma (Grades A-C)
    •   GNVQ Intermediate
    •   NVQ Level 2
    •   BTEC First Diploma
    •   City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent

    Course Structure

    The first and third years of the course are spent at the College. The second year involves work-based learning, gaining valuable experience in a related industry.

    The learning programme is linked as closely as possible to real-life work situations and comprises lectures, assignments, tutorials and practical work sessions. You will be expected to take responsibility for your personal learning programme, with the help and guidance of your tutor.


    What you will study

    A wide range of units spanning key aspects of land-based engineering are studied, including:
    • Agricultural machines
    • Effective use of communication and numerical skills
    • Engine technology including electrical and electronic systems
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic principles
    • Major design and build projects, and business operations
    • Science and mathematic principles
    • Vehicle chassis and transmission systems
    • Workshop practices, including welding and fabrication

    Assessment

    You will be assessed through a range of methods including assignments, tests and practical tasks.


    Progression

    Candidates who have successfully completed an Extended Diploma in Land-Based Technology have the opportunity to progress to foundation degrees and other higher education programmes.

    There is an increasing need in the UK for practical engineers who are good mechanics and who understand the sales processes and need for customer liaison.

    It is possible to study certain units of this Level 3 programme on a part-time basis.  A Subsidiary Diploma in Land-Based Technology comprises 6 units and is equivalent to one A level.
