    Programme Aims

    The programme is designed to provide you with the range of supervisory and core transferable skills, people skills and opportunities to gain the practical qualifications needed for you to obtain employment at a supervisory/managerial level within leisure and related industries; or to progress to a Level 4 programme. It is equivalent to two A-levels.

     


    Entry Requirements

    It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved one of the following:

    •  4GCSEs at grades A C, including English, Maths and Science
    •   Environmental and Land-Based Studies Higher Diploma (Grades A C)
    •   GNVQ Intermediate
    •   NVQ Level 2 BTEC
    •   First Diploma City and Guilds National Certificate or equivalent


    Course Structure

    This programme is designed to be both physically and mentally stimulating and offers the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in a variety of areas. These include canoeing, kayaking, power boating, mountain leadership, first aid and many others.

     

    Learning is undertaken through a combination of lectures, discussions, visits, skills instruction and work-based learning.

     

    One day each week is specifically set aside for you to develop practical and leadership skills. Practical sessions will use the excellent facilities at Bicton College and the variety of adventure locations available within the South West and further afield.


    What you will study

    This course is aimed at learners who show a keen interest and would like to pursue a career in sport. The programme offers core subjects that are combined with the following specialist units:
    • Alternative pursuits for outdoor adventure
    • Environmental education for outdoor adventure
    • Equipment and facilities for outdoor adventure activity
    • Fitness training and programming
    • Impact and sustainability in outdoor adventure
    • Land-based leadership and skills
    • Leadership in sport
    • Organising sports events
    • Outdoor adventure expeditions
    • Principles and practices in outdoor adventure
    • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
    • Sport as a business
    • Sports coaching
    • Water-based leadership and skills
    • Work-based experience in sport

    Assessment

    Assessment is through assignments and practical assessments of core subjects.

     


    Progression

    Successful learners may progress on to a Foundation Degree in Outdoor Adventure Management.

    Employment may typically be found in supervisory or managerial roles within the outdoor leisure industry.
