Programme Aims
This introductory full-time programme is designed to meet the demand for employment-orientated training for those wishing to work with young people within the outdoor industry. Learners will gain both personal development and leadership experience in a wide range of outdoor activities.
Entry Requirements
No qualifications are required but students must have a positive attitude towards learning. Every learner will have an initial assessment, this is nothing to be concerned about as we will use the results to act as a guide so that we can match the course to your needs.
Course Structure
Attendance is on a day release basis (9am-6pm on Thursdays) spanning 35 weeks from September to June, with the BVNA/ABC external examination taking place in June. If you are working part-time, your examination will be taken later in the year.
What you will study
The course is delivered in both practical and theory sessions, working towards your NVQ Level 2 Outdoor Activity Leadership portfolio with the following modules:
- Help to set up, take down and store equipment
- Help to maintain facility areas
- Help to provide good levels of service to participants and customers
- Help to plan and prepare a session
- Lead an activity within a session
- Deal with accidents and emergencies

- Kayaking / canoeing (British Canoe Union Awards)
- Climbing (MLTE awards)
- Sailing (RYA awards)
- Moorland walking
- Mountain biking
- Surfing
- High Ropes
Assessment
Progress is monitored by continuous assessment - there are no exams. The NVQ Level 1 will be assessed by your competence in the working environment and the production of a portfolio of evidence.
Progression
Learners may progress to the First Diploma Outdoor Leisure, NVQ Level 2 Adventurous Activity Leadership or access employment as an assistant instructor in outdoor activity centres.
