NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Transport of Animals by road - short and long journeys

Defra and EU regulations mean that those who transport animals in connection with an economic activity need to have a certificate confirming that they are competent to do so. There are 2 levels of certification:

We offer on-line multiple choice computer-based assessment for the NPTC Short Journey certificate. This covers knowledge of the following:

  • Risk assessments and legal requirements
  • responsibilities when transporting animals
  • planning a short journey by road
  • suitability of the vehicle
  • checking animals and fitness to travel
  • causes, signs and prevention of stress in animals
  • space allowances, stocking densities and segregation requirements
  • handling and animal welfare in transit
  • post-journey requirements
  • how to avoid unnecessary stress to stock during transport, including rest, food and water
  • how to care for casualty animals

We can arrange Long Journey assessments as required by the individual candidate. This consists of 3 units:

  1. Principles of transporting animlals by road on long journeys, covering all the sections as above. This can be taken on-line as above, or assessed verbally
  2. Specific practices involved in long journeys
  3. Practical assessment driving an animal transport vehicle
