Smallholding: Introductory Weekends and Training Days

As featured on Channel 4's 'My Dream Farm'.  Designed for those new and aspiring smallholders who are looking for information and practical experience to help with the management of their land and livestock.  

My Dream Farm (January 28th 2010) followed Monty Don as he helped a family try to realise their dream of making a go of it by working the land. They're determined to leave the rat race behind and transform their lives, but with few skills and no previous experience, it is far from easy, hence the family came to Bicton during the summer to find out more...

 

 Course Content:

  • Introduction to livestock husbandry:
    • nutrition, breeding, housing, health and welfare
    • Cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry  
  • Estate Maintenance:
    • Fencing,gates,hedges & ditches
    • Grassland management
    • Water and drainage
    • Wildlife & environment
  • Tractor and ATV handling
  • Rules, regulations, contacts, advice lines

Entry Requirements:
No formal qualifications are required , just interest and enthusiasm
