We will furnish you with the necessary technical skills to launch a rewarding career. While you do not need prior experience, you must have an interest in Horticulture. You will work under the supervision of the Grounds Manager, assisting them in their duties while you train and gain a better understanding of your trade. An apprenticeship with our organisation entails a mix of on-the-job training and classroom instruction. You need excellent communication skills to coordinate with other workers, such as carpenters or construction managers.

Specific Duties:

  • Undertake training as identified and directed in the provision of an efficient and effective quality service to clients
  • You will need to adopt a flexible approach to work and where the need arises, to undertake any other duties or activities deemed to be within the competence of the post holder as instructed by your Manager/Supervisor
  • Promote and implement the Group’s Equal Opportunities Policy in all aspect of work, and in dealing with colleagues and clients. Undertake training as identified and directed in the provision of an efficient and effective quality service to clients
  • You will be required to maintain full attendance at college and complete all required training to fulfil the requirements of the course. Undertake any other duties commensurate with the level of the post, including associated trades

Once trained you will carry out a range of horticultural tasks to maintain and develop the estate including but not limited to:

  • Grass cutting operations
  • Shrub maintenance
  • Weed control
  • Hedge cutting
  • Formal bedding
  • Tool and machinery maintenance
  • Plant, Tree and Shrub identification
  • Plant maintenance tasks, such as pruning, weeding, watering, potting and harvesting
  • Soil cultivation tasks
  • Planting and plant establishment
  • Basic propagation tasks, such as seed sowing, taking cuttings and their care and maintenance
  • Identification and control of pests, diseases and disorders
  • Ensuring that environmental best practice is followed
  • Planting, training and maintaining plants grown under protection
  • Ensure that health and safety requirements are central to the planning and implementation of all work
  • Liaise with the Grounds Manager to ensure that the grounds maintenance plan is delivered
  • Ensure all stores are maintained and equipment is logged and maintained to required standards and stored securely at all times
  • Keep records of activities undertaken
  • Ensure all statutory and requirements relating to grounds maintenance are met
