Bicton College Bicton LEVEL: 5 Agriculture & Countryside Management

If you are interested in specialising in the management of wildlife and the countryside, this programme can give you the relevant skills to work in the industry.
The programme includes work experience to give you hands-on knowledge and an insight into employment in the sector.

The programme is studied three days a week with a combination of classroom theory sessions and practical sessions in the field, giving experience of wildlife surveying and monitoring skills, and practical conservation techniques. The field sessions are supported by a range of taught sessions, tutorials and seminars; learning in a friendly environment with experts. The programme includes many visits to a wealth of diverse habitats in easy reach of the Bicton campus such as heathlands, woodlands and coastal habitats including sand dunes, estuaries, beaches and rocky shores.

You will have the opportunity to carry out an individual piece of research which can be linked to one of the many organisations assisting with this programme. You can also take part in a week-long field course at a site of conservation interest and it includes a second year wildlife identification module, run in conjunction with the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Throughout the year we have regular lectures and workshops from industry experts. The timetable includes special events that explores the diverse species and habitats we have on site such as, the biannual Bio blitzes.

The programme has been designed in close consultation with the conservation industry, making it extremely relevant for those planning a career in conservation and countryside management. Input from staff from the conservation industry will enable you to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.
Possible careers available with this qualification:

  • Senior Warden with Wildlife Trusts
  • Countryside Officer with a Local Authority
  • Countryside Ranger
  • Positions with organisations such as the Environment Agency, Local Authorities and the National Trust

The application process for full-time and part-time degree level courses with The Cornwall College Group starting in September 2017 is still open and we are taking applications.  Full-time applicants should apply via UCAS and part-time applicants directly via the College website.

Entry Requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required. Access to HE Diplomas - 45 credits at level 3. Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language, Science and Mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

This option includes an additional Science Gateway year which is ideal if you don’t have the right qualifications to apply for a degree programme straight away. If you are applying for the FdSc Countryside & Conservation Management - with Science Gateway route on UCAS you will need to use UCAS code: 332D. Please note that when studying the Science Gateway programme, you will be based at Cornwall College Newquay. Annual tuition fee is £7500
