Want to build on the games skills and abilities you already have? Then the BA Hons Top up for Games Design for Industry is for you.
Games are not just about entertainment, education or art, they are also about making money. Whether you want to work at a game studio or start your own independent, knowing about the key stages of production, software, hardware and how to work as an individual or within a team are just some of the key skills needed to be successful.
This course will enhance you game production, project management, software and entrepreneurship skills to help you begin your career in this growing industry. By the end of the course, you will have a portfolio, show reel and online presence to get you noticed and an effective business launch plan.
Through a student-centered project-based curriculum, you will work as a games designer to develop your specialist skills, while working individually and as part of an interdisciplinary team with students from across the programme.
Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone hoping to enhance their skills obtained from previous HE level 5 games courses. You need to have a very keen interest in games design, although with the large amount of roles within the production process Level 5s/FdAs in Art and Design, Media and other creative industries will also be considered.
Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree in Games. If applying from outside this industry for example; media, film or animation then a portfolio or show reel would be useful.
What will I do on the course?
Students will learn to develop games and their content following typical industry standard pipelines. You will create prototypes and fully working games enhancing your chosen specialism building a strong foundation for your chosen role in this exciting and innovative industry, for example; level designer, 3D model maker or animator, texture artist, concept artist, or even producer.
You will gain in depth knowledge of key industry standard software and techniques through working on your chosen career specialisms within large scale team projects, live client briefs and competitions. Students will produce innovative working game prototypes for emerging technologies such as virtual reality as well as having the opportunity to produce games and media for clients and the Colleges computer games company, providing students with real world experience of working to strict guidelines and deadlines.
Students will be encouraged and supported to develop their own independent projects and start up studios, whilst engaging with people and organisations beyond the college. The promotion of entrepreneurship and the development of enterprising behaviour to enhance designing, launching and running of a new business will also be central.
Students will have access to the Autodesk Entertainment suite of software (3D Max, Maya, Mudbox etc), Adobe Cloud (Photoshop, Premiere, After Fx, Flash etc) , Unreal Engine 4 and UDK, Blender, Construct 2 amongst others.
You will also have access to the excellent DBS Sound Labs and equipment, Film Studio with blue and green screens. Kinect Cameras for motion capture. Access to a large range of digital and analogue photography/film/audio and lighting equipment. Editing suites, Oculus Rifts and free hire of a large selection of audio-visual hardware. Wet and dry areas in studio for traditional animation tuition (stop motion and cel animation) with access to Rostrum camera stand and light boxes. 3 Sound labs and two film edit suites with access to Cubase, Logic and Audacity etc. Blue and green screen shooting spaces in our 4 Camera Black Magic Live TV studio (4k).
Excellent pastoral care for students and individual tailored learning. 3D workshops and access to Photography and ceramic studios (sculpting). Industry standard 3D printers and scanner and 3 lecture theatres.
We also attend games festivals such as Rezzed.
What will I do after the course?
At the end of the year you should have developed the skills and qualifications necessary to begin a career within the games sector or other similar, creative or technical industries. You may even want to be a freelancer. Alternatively, successful students can choose to continue their studies at Falmouth University as part of their Alacrity programme subject to confirmation.

Game Worlds, Innovation and Production (CORC381)
This module will allow students to experiment with both hardware and software, in a chosen area of games development, to produce innovative outcomes that develop both the appearance of the game/s and the personality of the content.
Team production of prototypes will be explored, as well as a variety of methods to improve immersion, narrative and visual impact. Students will be supported and encouraged to investigate design innovations such as virtual reality, to develop new methods of enhancing game-play.
Honours Team Project 1 (CORC380)
This module enables the student to draw upon specialist and supporting studies to create a coherent integrated major team project. Each student is expected to display analytical and creative skills that demonstrate a level of independent learning, appropriate to level 6 project work.
The module will also provide students with opportunities to develop their problem solving and communication skills working both individually and as part of a team. For this module the students will form into creative teams and negotiate and agree a project proposal with their assigned tutor. Roles within the team will be delegated according to relevant career specialism and individuals will carry out intensive research relevant to the framework and concept of their game. Teams will formulate and manage their ideas constructing prototypes before finalising the project proposal and game documentation
Honours Team Project 2 (CORC383)
For this module students will create a large scale game clearly related to, and expanding upon, the games design documents and prototypes they have already created for Honours Team Project 1.
Students will draw upon the specialist knowledge and skills found within their creative teams, to complete the design process, from concept to final implementation and testing.
Students will review their efforts, reflecting on the production stages of the game and compare their finished artefact to the specifications of their original games design document.
Commercial Games Practice & Enterprise (CORC382)
In this module students will explore, research and consolidate their knowledge and understanding of the enterprise and employment context of the digital games industry. Each student will receive career and business advice specifically tailored to their individual aspirations. Working both as part of a team and individually, on client based briefs, competitions, and/or via the colleges games design company, whilst preparing and producing a launch plan, along with promotional material to brand and market themselves as professionals within the games design industry.
This course is designed to enhance the games/design skills you already have as well as introducing you to new ones. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the techniques and skills needed to start up your own studio or go freelance.
You will learn the importance of developing enterprising behavior and how best to promote yourself. Communications between the games/animation industry and this course are extremely important. Developments in the industry and knowledge gained by staff in their own practice are passed down to the students to inform theirs.
Work experience is also a very important part of the study programme and students should expect to be involved in competitions and live briefs. Students will develop and enhance their games design skills and abilities to provide them with the best opportunity to gain employment at the end of the course.
This is supported by an advanced skills & knowledge set reflecting their particular direction through the programme. At Level 6 each student is expected to develop an independent, autonomous practice but with skills and attributes to be part of any team within any typical games design studio. The course aims to facilitate within graduates an enthusiasm, curiosity & flexibility to equip them for a future in developing games and their content.
