Access courses are designed as a stepping stone to enable motivated, enthusiastic people to progress on to Higher Education.

The course is challenging and requires full attendance and absolute commitment to allow you to fully maximise your opportunities; you will have access to a range of support mechanisms to enable you to develop the key academic competencies to contribute towards successful progression.

Ideal if:

You are interested in communications careers, including journalism, photojournalism, broadcasting and web publishing, but do not have the traditional qualifications for university entry. You will follow a varied and stimulating programme which includes production of a monthly college magazine.

You’ll need:

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, applicants will need to attend a workshop and  undertake an initial assessment and interview in order to demonstrate their ability to study at this level. Previous qualifications and experience will be taken into account but these are not essential.

You’ll learn:

You will explore media in both practise and theory via a range of units focused on developing your knowledge of professional writing, technical skills, society and the law. The specific units included are subject to confirmation.


You will attend college two days per week from 9.00am until 4.30pm over 35 weeks. You may study one GCSE alongside this course (Maths or English) or in exceptional circumstances you may be allowed to study both. You are expected to do 10-15 hours per week of home study or supported study on campus.

You will be assessed using essays, reports, creative writing and presentations. There are no exams or tests on this course.

You’ll go on to:

Students can progress onto Higher National Diplomas and Foundation and Honours degrees in subjects including Media Studies, Journalism, Sports Journalism, English, Publishing and Linguistics.
