Enhance Your Trade Skills on Our Practical 10 Week Courses

Starting on Saturday 23rd September, Cornwall College will be hosting another series of Saturday Skills Workshops. Perfect for anyone interested in either improving their DIY skills, or for existing trades people who are looking to enhance their careers.

Courses available include; plumbing, furniture making, plastering, brick and blockwork and bench joinery. On successful completion each learner will receive a college certificate.

Each course is just 10 weeks and subject to availability and status is fully funded by the ESF.

Designed to meet the needs of both enthusiast and professional, the Saturday Skills Workshops will give you all the necessary knowledge and hands-on experience you need to gain useful new skills.

Plastering (inc Rendering)
Introduction to tools and their uses, applying materials to solid backgrounds.Learning techniques inc, skimming and dot & dab, plaster boarding, rendering and patch plaster.
Cost: £350* May be fully funded, subject to eligibility criteria

Times: 9:30am – 12:30pm

Traditional Furniture Making
Introduction to basic tools and their uses, tool sharpening and maintenance, correct marking out, cabinet project, cutting various joints by hand inc, Halving, Mortice, Tenon and Dove Tail, clamping, use of adhesives and finishing.
Cost: £350* May be fully funded, subject to eligibility criteria
Duration: 10 weeks
Times: 9:30am – 12:30pm

Bench Joinery
Introduction to basic tools and their uses, marking out, cut and assembly, cutting various joints inc, Halving, Mortice, Tenon and Dove Tail, Half Laps and Frankled Joints. Techniques to make window sashes, finishing and treatments.
Cost: £250* May be fully funded, subject to eligibility criteria
Duration: 10 weeks
Times: 9:30am – 12:30pm                                     

Plumbing (Pipework)
Introduction to basic tools and their uses, cutting and soldering copper pipe, how to bend copper pipe, using capillary fittings,  how to replace tap washers and pressure test a system, waste pipe assembly, checking and replacing radiators, how to install a washing machine and more.
Cost £250* May be fully funded, subject to eligibility criteria
Duration: 10 weeks
Times: 9:30am – 12:30pm                              

Brick & Blockwork
Introduction to basic tools and their uses, how to mix mortar correctly, fundamentals of blocklaying gauge, level, plumb and range. How to set out and spot board and stack blocks ready for use, how to spread and roll out mortar, how to build corners, correct measurements, how to build a cavity wall to building designs, how to build a block pillar and use various lintels.
Cost: £250* May be fully funded, subject to eligibility criteria
Duration: 10 weeks
Times: 9:30am – 12:30pm      

All the workshops are held on Saturday’s so as not to interfere with work or other home commitments.

Ideal for those looking to develop their skills in brickwork and who want to enter the construction industry, or who want to earn a recognised qualification on successful completion. This course will take place in both the classroom and practical building areas to help build up your knowledge and skills base.  The course will get you involved in various projects to really enhance all the techniques and give you the confidence to use your new skill.
Cost: £500
Times: 9:30am – 4:30pm
