Gaining a qualification in English and mathematics can potentially add £2,000 to your salary every year. Research shows that achieving 4, A*- C GCSE grades, including the vital English and mathematics adds £80,000 to a student’s earning over their life time (Department for Education, March 2015).
If you haven’t gained a grade 4 or C in GCSE English and mathematics on entry to Cornwall College you will be required to continue studying these subjects. We offer an experience that is different to school by keeping your learning relevant alongside supporting your preparation for the exam. There are a range of English and mathematics qualifications available to you that will ensure you’re suitably challenged and building on existing knowledge. We’ll assess your level of English and mathematics and make sure you get the help and motivation you need grow your confidence and succeed.
These courses are for anyone who would like to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, mathematical skills and ICT skills.
The courses are available at different levels and students will complete an initial assessment to place them on the right level.
These courses are for anyone who would like to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and gain a recognised qualification. You will also have the opportunity to progress to the next appropriate level.
A number of topics are covered which will be useful for everyday life. For example: multiplication and division of numbers, handling money, recording and using measurements, understanding graphs and tables and working out percentages. There will be some problem solving activities requiring calculations, common fractions, decimals and percentages.
Functional skills ICT is designed to develop and assess functional ICT from entry level 1 to level 2 to ensure clear progression pathways and personal development opportunities. The qualification and assessment are intended to enhance skills application across a range of contexts. The knowledge, skills and problem-solving approaches contained within the qualification provide tools that can be utilised in work, life and further learning. This qualification will encourage learners to demonstrate their using ICT, finding and selecting information and developing, presenting and communicating information skills and are designed to develop and recognise the ability of learners to apply and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation. Functional skills are recognised as vital to learner’s personal development, increasing both confidence and effectiveness.
