Assistant Practitioners in Healthcare Diploma (Higher Apprenticeship)

This course is suitable for learners who work or want to work as an Assistant Practitioner in Healthcare and related services and who want to extend their knowledge and skills in this area. This is also ideal for those new to working in the care sector who have completed recent academic study.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should be employed for at least 15 hours (2 days) per week in the healthcare sector.  For learners not employed in a setting where they will be able to learn and practice clinical skills, a weekly placement for the duration of the course will need to be arranged with a suitable mentor to support them through the practice elements of the programme. Learners will be supported by the appropriate College staff to find a suitable placement. This will need to be agreed with the Course Manager on application with a supporting letter from your employer/work placement provider.

In addition learners should have a minimum of a relevant level 3 qualification or equivalent and preferably have previous experience of working or volunteering in a care or health setting. GCSEs required at grade C or above in English language and mathematics.

What You Will Learn:

To achieve the Level 5 Diploma for Assistant Practitioners in Healthcare, learners must achieve 120 credits studying a range of units such as:

  • Safeguarding
  • Professional development
  • Functions of the body
  • Communication
  • Health and Safety
  • Nutrition and fluid balance
  • Principles and philosophy of healthcare
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Infection prevention and control

You will also undertake a research project as well as employment and personal learning skills.

Throughout the programme of study  learners will be assigned an assessor who will carry out observations in the workplace against set competences, as well as meet with your mentor to discuss progress.

Expect:

Learners will attend College 1 day a month, with additional support sessions planned throughout the year and work based skills being carried out in the workplace.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be a mandatory requirement after you have been accepted on the programme, which the College will support you with.

Progression:

On completion of this qualification, learners may progress onto further qualifications specific to their work context. A wide range of qualifications are available such as higher education qualifications or other work-related education and training to support Continuing Professional Development.
