This qualification aims to introduce learners to the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. This course gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately. This qualification does not qualify learners to practice as a counsellor.

This course is designed for those who wish to develop counselling skills and increase their self-awareness. Successful completion of the course means you would have developed a greater self-awareness, counselling skills and an understanding of counselling and the counselling process.

You are working in the caring and helping professions or for those in other areas of work or study where the value of counselling and skills is recognised.

You’ll need:

No prior experience necessary; this introductory programme is an essential starting point if you are looking to progress on to our range of further counselling programmes. Although you do need to be aged 19 or over.

You’ll learn:

This qualification consists of four mandatory units which must all be completed in order to be awarded the qualification.

Units are:

  • Using counselling skills
  • Introduction to counselling skills theories
  • Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
  • Counselling skills and personal development


To complete a portfolio of work demonstrating your knowledge and understanding of the course.

Further counselling courses such as the Certificate in Advanced Counselling Studies or the Diploma in Person Centred Counselling and Therapy.

Learners aged 19-23 who do not already have a full level 2 qualification, ie 5 GCSEs Grades A-C. or 9-4, the course cost will be £811.00. For learners with a full level 2 or above then the £510.00 fee remains the same.
