Cornwall College Worcester LEVEL: 5 Social Care & Health

This foundation degree is being offered by the Centre for Housing and Support in Worcester as a qualification for those who work for housing organisations that provide independent living services for vulnerable people or, in exceptional circumstances, for those seeking to work for such organisations.

The focus of the programme is the exploration of how housing organisations can contribute to enabling independent living, to which end the subjects it covers include: the history of care and support, theory and practice, policy, the meaning of home, assisted living technology, inequality, law and markets in service provision. It also offers opportunities for professional development and to carry out some small scale work-based research.
Work-related experience is a key component of the programme and the modules are designed to allow you to apply your learning to your workplace and to use your experience. You will also develop important academic skills, such as report and essay writing, critical thinking, and designing and carrying out research, all of which are transferrable to the workplace.

The climax of the programme is the work-based research project in year three where you will use the skills learned in the research skills module to carry out your own work-based research, based upon a proposal that you have developed.
The foundation degree is delivered part-time over three years using a mixture of face-to-face teaching at residentials in Worcester in Years 1 and 2, and online learning supported by an experienced tutor. This means it is well-suited to professionals with busy work schedules.
