Construction Diploma

Level 1 • Full-time • Bicton College


Land based, work based plant operations Level 1 is the course if you want an overall introduction to the construction industry and most importantly heavy plant operations. You will have the opportunity to carry out a number of construction tasks using plant ranging from 1.5 ton mini excavators up to 14 ton 360 degree tracked excavators and if that’s not enough you will also receive introductory training using 6 ton high vis forward tipping dumpers and telescopic handlers. Literally getting in at ground level, gaining the experience to develop your skills before progressing on to the level 2 course and gaining your CPCS certificate for professional operators. During the course you will be trained and given the opportunity to gain your CPCS operators Health and safety card which is the first step and an essential requirement to gain access and open door to a host of opportunities in the construction industry. As a trainee operator you will be involved initially in basic excavation trenching etc. then progressing onto more complex excavations for example structural foundations and service boxes. All training will be delivered to the high standards required By the Construction industry training board. Bicton College is in the fortunate position to be in partnership with Holt JCB, this allows students access to the range of the most up to date machines currently available.

Plant Operations - Groundworks Certificate

Level 2 • • Bicton College


This Plant Operations certificate is your gateway to gaining your full professional operators qualification if you want operate heavy plant to the exacting standards of the modern construction site this is the course for you. Once complete and the CPCS test has been passed this is your passport to a career in the construction industry and recognition of your professional operating skills. You will have the opportunity to carry out a number of construction tasks using plant ranging for 1.5 ton mini excavators up to 14 ton 360 degree tracked excavators and if that’s not enough you will also receive industry training using 6 ton High vis forward tipping dumpers and Telescopic handlers. At the end of the 1 year course you will have been assessed on 4 machines to gain your level 2 qualification and given the opportunity to take CPCS tests should you wish. Groundworks is the specific job role of preparing the ground using some of these machines within a construction, civil engineering, roads, railways or landscaping project. In order to work on a construction site you will need to gain your Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) certification. On top of that you will gain tickets to prove you are skilled and experienced in operating and maintaining a wide range of specialist large plant machinery. To work in the industry you will need to achieve the Level 2 qualification. On this Level 2 course, you will learn how to operate a variety of equipment including excavators, forklifts, dumpers and road rollers.

NOCN Cskills Awards Level 1 Diploma in Construction Multiskills with Plant Operations options. The construction industry is a growing sector in the UK. There are over 3000 construction companies based in Cornwall, alone; employing 30,000 workers. In the last 5 years over £2 billion has been spent on construction projects in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, with a further £1.3 billion to be invested over the next few years. There will always be a need for skilled workers within this sector. The Level 1 Diploma in Construction Multiskills is aimed at those with little or no experience in construction. It is your starting point to an interesting and varied career within the construction industry. Learners will be assessed using a combination of internally set and assessed units, and externally set and assessed units. The aim of this course is to: • Help develop the learner’s range of skills and techniques • Build confidence • Achieve a nationally recognised qualification • Progress into employment within the construction sector • Progress onto related vocational qualifications In addition to the course, we also give our learners the opportunity to work towards gaining their CSCS Labourer card (Green Card). This is an industry-recognised qualification, which will allow learners to progress into employment, an apprenticeship or onto the next level course to help gain further qualifications. You will need to supply or purchase your own PPE and contribute towards CSCS test costs.
