Arborist Apprenticeship Standard (Tree Surgery)

The arboriculture industry manages trees for their benefits and values in diverse urban and rural locations from city parks and urban woodlands, to country estates and private gardens. The industry manages trees adjacent to highways, railways, watercourses and power lines. An arborist may progress to undertake inspections and surveys of individual and woodland trees, advising landowners on how to care for their trees, or teaching others about the benefits of carefully managing trees. The work of an arborist involves diverse activities such as chainsaw work, aerial tree work, pruning, dismantling and using appropriate machinery such as brushwood chippers. Arborists can work for local authorities, private companies and many are also self-employed. Tree work can be physically demanding and involves working outdoors in all weathers. While learning the practical side of arboriculture with your employer, you will also be required to attend college on a block release programme. Land-based Engineering Apprenticeship

Horticulture & Landscape Operative Intermediate Apprenticeship

Horticulture and Landscape Operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities; such as grounds maintenance (soft-landscape) or landscape construction (hard-landscape). Soft- landscaping includes the establishment and maintenance of plants and cultivated areas. Hard-landscaping includes establishment of hard surfaces and structures in addition to the establishment of plants in cultivated areas. The distinct nature of these two specialisms means very few businesses can offer the full breadth of skills and therefore two options are available for this occupation; horticulture and landscape construction. The employment area will dictate the option pursued. Work is generally based outside and undertaken throughout the year, so apprentices will frequently work outside in all weathers. Often people new to the industry will start in a ‘hands-on’ role covering a range of practical tasks, with specialist skills being learnt through progression. A wide range of machinery and tools are used and additional training may be required depending on the nature of the works undertaken. Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2

In order to start your apprenticeship in horse care you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving. Both Bicton College and Duchy Stoke Climsland capuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point practical assessments. Expect to spend time away from your employer on Day release with practical and theory delivery helping you to prepare for your EPA (End Point assessment) with the support of your work coach. Assignments will also be set as well as various classroom activities, workshops and tasks to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed alongside support and training from your employer in order to prepare you for a career in the equine industry. Agriculture (Stockperson) Apprenticeship

The industry provides unique opportunities for young people to work in a technically advanced and innovative environment, producing one of the country’s most important products – food which accounts for 14% of the British GDP. Businesses within the industry range from small family farms through to large integrated organisations working across the food supply chain. The key role for a Stockperson is to raise the animals with optimal welfare and consideration for their needs throughout the different stages of their life. This is practical work involving a combination of technology and manual labour. Being a stockperson requires compassion, self-motivation and the ability to work in a team and independently. A stockperson will be responsible for their own work, but will have close supervision. As animal welfare is a priority on farms, key to being a good stockperson is understanding your limits and knowing when to ask for help. Working with live animals presents a range of challenges to overcome and ensures no two days will be the same. This standard follows a ‘core and options’ approach. The core covers the generic requirements for looking after animals competently and the sector options provide more specific needs for different livestock. One option will be taken in addition to the core skills to complete this apprenticeship, which provides a solid foundation for a range of progression opportunities within the industry. At college you will cover 50% theory and 50% practical work, which will include learning more about tractor and machinery use, nutrition, health and welfare, health and safety, environment and conservation, and welding. You will be expected to undertake and pass a range of courses as part of this apprenticeship to include emergency first aid at work and the safe use of pesticides as well as choosing to do one of the following Boom sprayer, mounted, trailed or self-propelled equipment Granular applicator equipment Handheld applicator equipment Other short legislative courses are heavily subsidised such as Tele Handler, ATV and Mule.
