Extended Certificate in Horse Care

Level 2 • Full-time • Equine department


If you can’t get enough of horses and have your sights set on working with them, then this is the course for you and will be your first step into an equine career. The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time on our working yard, learning by doing, while you work with a range of horses. You will be learning a wide range of husbandry skills, from the day to day care of horses to include feeding, grooming and exercising them. You will be developing all of the basic and essential skills you need to care for horses whilst being supervised and supported. Although Riding is not assessed on this course you will have the opportunity to ride once or twice a week to develop these skills, ready for the next course. Our top class facilities include stabling for 24 horses, horse walker, solarium, and covered practical area, 20m x 60m indoor arena with viewing gallery and 30m x 60m outdoor arena. We provide a range of horses to suit all abilities including cobs, thoroughbreds, young horses and competition horses. As a 3 day, Level 2 course, this certificate is all about introducing you to the equine industry and developing your essential skills. You’ll be learning from experienced equine professionals and instructors, who are there to give you the very best start to your career. All the staff are BHS trained and hold various BHS qualifications up to Stage 5, including a BHS assessor, BD Judge.

Work Based Diploma in Horse Management

Level 3 • Full-time • Equine department


The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – by the time you have completed this course you will be ready to have your dream job and enter the world of work, such as running a yard and managing a small team. The industry placement part of this course will also support the practical side of the course and with an online portfolio you will be able to upload real live evidence from both College and the work placement settings. The Level 3 is a great stepping stone into the industry, it provides all the experiences you would get from a professional working yard within a learning environment, the Industry placement aspect may also give you the link to your dream job. This 1 year course is a great way of progressing on from our Level 2 equine course or developing existing skills, turning your passion for horses into a lifelong career. The Level 3 covers a wide range of subjects allowing the students to enhance the skills they learnt in Level 2 or have got from previous experiences in the industry, the focus is the step up to a managerial role, taking more responsibility for the horses and the yard. Our top class facilities include stabling for 24 horses, horse walker, solarium, and covered practical area, 20m x 60m indoor arena with viewing gallery and 30m x 60m outdoor arena. We provide a range of horses to suit all abilities including cobs, thoroughbreds, young horses and competition horses. We are one of Devon’s top equestrian indoor competition centres, with a wide variety of unaffiliated and affiliated competitions being held here on a regular basis, you will also gain valuable experience in running Equine competitions. All the staff are BHS trained and hold various BHS qualifications up to Stage 5, including a BHS assessor, BD Judge. Students ride 3 to 4 times a week with a mixture of hacking, schooling and jumping which equates to up to £3000 of riding sessions throughout the year. As a Level 3 course, this diploma is all about developing your key equine skills to the highest standard to work well as part of a team and as the team leader. You’ll be learning from experienced professional instructors and lecturers, who are there to give you the very best start to your career. Work Based Diploma in Horse Care and Management

Level 2 • Full-time • Equine department

The first thing you’ll notice about this course is that it’s about practical learning – you’ll be spending a lot of time on our college yard, learning by doing as you work with a range of horses and equipment. You’ll be studying a range of skills covering riding (optional), lungeing, bandaging, feeding, preparing horses for travel, monitoring health and many more. You’ll be studying and developing all of the essential skills you need to work with a range of horses and continue your professional development. Throughout the year we run trips to yards and events, as well as inviting industry professionals into the college to offer careers advice and practical demonstrations. Combined with your work experience this gives plenty of opportunities to explore the different career pathways that this course offers. Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2

Level 2 • Work-based • Equine department


In order to start your apprenticeship in horse care you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving. Both Bicton College and Duchy Stoke Climsland capuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point practical assessments. Expect to spend time away from your employer on Day release with practical and theory delivery helping you to prepare for your EPA (End Point assessment) with the support of your work coach. Assignments will also be set as well as various classroom activities, workshops and tasks to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed alongside support and training from your employer in order to prepare you for a career in the equine industry. Remote and Blended delivery – If you live too far away from the college to attend college each week then we can arrange for you to go onto a remote programme of delivery and assessment with more one to one support by your work coach and assessor. Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship

Level 3 • Work-based • Equine department


This Level 3 apprenticeship will help you prepare for a more supervisory role, which could include planning horses’ diet, nutrition and health plans. During the course you will learn how to promote and maintain the health and well-being of horses, prepare horses for work, maintain their health and well-being during transportation and consider health and safety.
