Christmas door wreath and table decoration workshop

No Qualification • Part-time • Bicton College


Come along to our online workshop and enjoy trying out your floristry skills in making your own festive door wreath and a lovely arrangement for your Christmas table (with optional candles) to extend your Christmas theme from outside to in. We will be using a range of aromatic foliage alongside scented cinnamon sticks and orange slices. Materials will be sent to you and as this is an online workshop it will be completely interactive, you will be guided by your instructor and can ask questions as you go. The course is free however, the price noted is for the materials required. Please use the website to book and instructions will be provided should you wish to purchase materials from us. Please note, materials will need to be paid for and collected from Bicton College prior to the workshop. Award In Felling Trees Up To 380mm

The Level 2 Award in Felling Trees up to 380mm takes places over 5 days. The first 4 days consist of training and assessment is on the 5th day. Applicants must be over 16 years of age and hold a valid NPTC Certificate of Competence: CS30 Chainsaw Maintenance. Proof of pre-qualifications must be emailed/posted to the college before the course start date as evidence. Other awarding body qualifications must be submitted to check if they are compatible with this NPTC course. During this course, you will study the following – Organisation Preparation of the work site Risk assessment Assessment of felling direction Controlled felling techniques Systematic and efficient de-limbing techniques Correct lifting techniques and techniques in safe take down of hung-up trees This course runs every month, please contact us for information on dates and times.

Award In Tree Climbing & Rescue

This training course is intended for those involved in tree climbing operations and leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial rescue. It does not involve use of a chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirement for a ground person working with a climber in arboriculture. As aerial rescue is obligatory, those attending should have a ‘head for heights’. Training takes place over the first 5 days with assessment on Day 6. On this course you will identify functions and fitting of specialist equipment, use and tying of specialist knots, pre-climbing equipment checks; identification of hazards such as overhead cables, role of the climber and of the ground person, secure working position, climbing techniques, branch walking, use of supplementary anchor points, storage of equipment and regulations (LOLER, PUWER). Our courses run one day per week, over 10 to 13 weeks per term. This is a one year course starting in September each year. An award, certificate or diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills is for young people (16+) and adults getting started in the horticulture industry. You don't need any previous experience or a current work placement.

Based at Cornwall’s Eden Project, the BSc (Hons) Horticulture Garden & Landscape Design has been specifically developed to provide industry competent horticulturalists, who have significant design capabilities and a detailed understanding of horticulture science. On this unique programme you will develop skills valuable to numerous sectors of the horticultural industry both in the UK and abroad. Eden’s diverse and specialist plant collections, nurseries and growing facilities, dedicated laboratory and design studio, coupled with Duchy College’s nationally renowned micro propagation research facility, provide a world class study platform. A diverse team of subject specialists supports you in your studies. This includes plant pathologists, botanists, ecologists, garden designers, artists, landscape architects and horticulturalists, many of whom partner private practice with their teaching commitments. Students under the tutelage of members of the current teaching team have won numerous awards including the Prince of Wales Trophy for Sustainable Horticulture last year, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Young Designer of the Year three times in the last five years and the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Student Designer of the Year Award three times in the past six years, the latest in 2015. You will also embrace sustainable business practice and develop skills in planting design and design communication, using both traditional and digital media (no prior experience required). In the core garden and landscape design modules, innovative and imaginative design practice is encouraged from day one. Through real or ‘live’ projects you will learn how to create stimulating and thought-provoking spaces in a variety of locations – from private gardens to public landscapes. Clients who students have worked with recently include Truro Cathedral, The Pengersick Castle Trust, The Eden Project, The Leonard Cheshire Disability Trust and the Potager Garden.

Gardening - Your Road To Wellbeing

On this course you will develop your gardening skills whilst working as part of the team to maintain and enhance community centre grounds. As well as planting herbs, plants and shrubs you will also learn how to take cuttings, propagate, and maintain and develop the established gardens at one of our off-site locations. Richmond House, Penzance – Wednesdays 10am – 12:30pm and 1pm – 3:30pm Liskerrett Centre, Liskeard – Thursdays 10am – 4pm Coach House, Liskeard – Fridays 10am – 3pm Richmond House has a small greenhouse, many containers and a small vegetable area and fruit trees. Liskerrett Centre has a polytunnel, containers and areas suitable for growing a variety of produce and fruit trees. You will also help support the community store within the centre. The Coach House has a large polytunnel, small greenhouse, sheds, many containers and a small vegetable area and fruit trees. It is a peaceful area to learn gardening skills, how to use plants in a culinary and medicinal way, designing the garden, companion planting, composting and organic gardening. At all locations you will be encouraged to focus on areas of interest to you with tutor support. Our road to wellbeing courses are relaxed and informal, enabling you to improve your wellbeing and mental health, building your self-confidence, and they are a great way to make friends.
