This course is suitable for horse owners wishing to learn about horse behaviour and how to apply that knowledge in practice.

Throughout this course, students will learn how to recognise different behaviours in horses and how they can impact the horse-human relationship.

Often horse owners miscommunicate with horses, keeping instructions clear is important to avoid conflict and cause fear or unwanted behaviours.

We will explore the underlying causes of behavioural issues and how we may resolve them.

Please ensure that you come wearing suitable clothing and yard footwear.

This course will run from 09:30-16:30

Please note: this course is suitable for applicants aged 19+

Learn the basic skills to start your career working with Horses on our Level 1 Horse Care course. If your GCSEs were not what you expected, this course is an ideal starting point in order to progress onto Level 2. You will learn the basic skills and knowledge associated with horse care including: feeding, cleaning and exercising and general care. Caring for horses can be an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career and there are a wide range of options available on successful completion of your course. Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship

This Level 3 apprenticeship will help you prepare for a more supervisory role, which could include planning horses’ diet, nutrition and health plans. During the course you will learn how to promote and maintain the health and well-being of horses, prepare horses for work, maintain their health and well-being during transportation and consider health and safety. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money. Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2

Level 2 • Work-based • Bicton College


In order to start your apprenticeship in horse care you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving. Both Bicton College and Duchy Stoke Climsland capuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point practical assessments. Expect to spend time away from your employer on Day release with practical and theory delivery helping you to prepare for your EPA (End Point assessment) with the support of your work coach. Assignments will also be set as well as various classroom activities, workshops and tasks to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed alongside support and training from your employer in order to prepare you for a career in the equine industry. Remote and Blended delivery – If you live too far away from the college to attend college each week then we can arrange for you to go onto a remote programme of delivery and assessment with more one to one support by your work coach and assessor.
