This course runs over 3 days – 2 days training followed by assessment on Day 3. You will need to be fully competent in the use of a chainsaw and have a full set of personal protective clothing complying with current Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

Applicants must be aged sixteen or older and hold the following NPTC Certificates of Competence:

Chainsaw Maintenance – CS30

Small Tree Felling – CS31

Climb Tree and Perform Aerial Rescue – CS38

Proof of pre-qualifications must be emailed/posted to the college before the course start date as evidence.

Other awarding body qualifications must be submitted to check if they are compatible with this NPTC course.

This Level 1 course will take place at School Farm CSA, a certified organic farm on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon. It is suitable for those who want to grow on any scale, whether it is a small patio garden, an allotment or on a larger piece of land. The farm grows a variety of crops, utilizing different methods and mainly hand tools, to provide enough vegetables for their 35 veg box customers and to sell to local shops and restaurants. Course teaching is delivered by the CSA’s staff, all experienced growers who have themselves been through the process of gaining qualifications in organic growing before they launched their own farm enterprise. This course is suitable for anyone with some experience of gardening or plant knowledge, although can be enjoyed by enthusiastic beginners and more experienced gardeners alike. Students can expect 1 day a week of practical learning on the land in different seasons and weather conditions.

Practical Horticulture Skills Certificate: Organic Vegetable Production (Dartington)

This year long course, running 1 day a week, is a great introduction to organic horticulture, with a focus on food growing. Following the seasons students look at soils, seeds, compost, and plant care, as well as creating planting plans and exploring different approaches to food growing including permaculture, forest gardening, no-dig gardening and working with wildlife. The local food economy is growing fast and many more people are keen to connect with where their food comes from. This offers many opportunities as producers and for professional gardeners to expand their skill-set to offer food growing and wildlife gardening to their customers. This course takes place at School Farm CSA, a certified organic community market garden on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon, and through the year there will be visits to other growing projects in the area. The course is delivered by experienced growers who have themselves been through the process of gaining qualifications and practical experience in organic growing before they launched their own growing enterprise. The techniques and tools used will be applicable to both the home/ allotment gardener, professional gardeners and people who might want to set up their own food growing enterprise.
