Focussing upon the fundamental practical skills in horticulture, the learner will be able to learn skills such as planting out, preparing ground, plant maintenance techniques.

An Award in Practical Horticulture Skills is for adult learners (19+) and adults getting started in the horticulture industry. Or you might be working in a horticulture job and want to improve your skills. You don't need any previous experience or a current work placement.

This level will suit you if you've developed a real interest in Horticulture and want to either progress into work, progress from Level 1 to other related horticulture qualifications, or if you have a passion for learning more about horticulture and developing your skills and knowledge further.

The qualification is taken as part-time learning from Dartington.

In this course we’ll be exploring basic home-growing know-how and techniques, helping you to learn the ‘whats, whens, and hows’ to make the most of your vegetable patch throughout the year. Based indoors, and outside - around the walled garden and greenhouse at Bicton, these informal fortnightly sessions will give ideas and inspiration for your plot, and support your veg-growing -whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, and whatever garden space you have at home. You will learn about year-round vegetable-growing; soil care including fertility-building and weed management; pest and disease problem-solving; and organic principles; with practical sowing and growing fun, discussions, and group activities.
