This Level 1 course will take place at School Farm, on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon. It is a great introduction for those who want to grow on any scale, whether it is a small patio garden, an allotment or on a larger piece of land.

The School Farm site hosts a range of enterprises from vegetable growers to therapeutic horticulture and the course will be delivered by experienced growers and teachers from the enterprises.

This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in or some experience of gardening or plant knowledge, and can be enjoyed by enthusiastic beginners and more experienced gardeners alike.

Students can expect 1 day a week of practical learning on the land in different seasons and weather conditions.

  Entry Requirements

There are no strict entry requirements, but some experience of gardening and plants is very valuable and enthusiasm to learn is essential.

  Progression

Students may go on to grow their own food, work as a gardener, set up a growing enterprise or further study or apprenticeships in organic growing.

Award In Tree Climbing & Rescue

This training course is intended for those involved in tree climbing operations and leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial rescue. It does not involve use of a chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirement for a ground person working with a climber in arboriculture. As aerial rescue is obligatory, those attending should have a ‘head for heights’. Training takes place over the first 5 days with assessment on Day 6. On this course you will identify functions and fitting of specialist equipment, use and tying of specialist knots, pre-climbing equipment checks; identification of hazards such as overhead cables, role of the climber and of the ground person, secure working position, climbing techniques, branch walking, use of supplementary anchor points, storage of equipment and regulations (LOLER, PUWER). Planning And Planting A Herb Garden ( Occupational Studies) – Dartington

This 6 week course, running 1 day a week, is a great introduction to growing organic herbs for food, health and wildlife. Students will get to know many different herbs and learn about growing them, planning a garden, and different ways of harvesting and using herbs. The course offers some great ideas for small scale enterprise and an introduction to specific professional skills. This course takes place in the herb garden at School Farm CSA, a certified organic community market garden on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon. The course is delivered by an experienced grower, with a small herb nursery business, and a love of growing and using herbs for health and cooking. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in growing herbs and can be applicable to people growing in pots, a small garden or on a larger scale both professionally and for home use. Some experience of gardening or plant knowledge, will be beneficial, although the course can be enjoyed by beginners and more experienced gardeners alike.

Award In Aerial Cutting Of Trees Using Free-Fall Techniques

Level 3 • Part-time • Bicton College


This course runs over 3 days – 2 days training followed by assessment on Day 3. You will need to be fully competent in the use of a chainsaw and have a full set of personal protective clothing complying with current Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Applicants must be aged sixteen or older and hold the following NPTC Certificates of Competence: Chainsaw Maintenance – CS30 Small Tree Felling – CS31 Climb Tree and Perform Aerial Rescue – CS38 Proof of pre-qualifications must be emailed/posted to the college before the course start date as evidence. Other awarding body qualifications must be submitted to check if they are compatible with this NPTC course.
