Please note: this course is delivered at both our Bicton Campus and at an off-site location in Plymouth.

  What You Will Learn

Through this qualification you will learn about different flowers and plants and how to look after them. You will also learn that there is more to floristry than flowers and that for florists to be successful, they need to understand their tools, environment and the finishing touches that make a difference. With this, you will develop an understanding of design principles and the skills needed to apply these to the design and creation of floristry products. You will gain an understanding of how floristry business operate and develop skills needed to interact with customers and identify their needs.

  Entry Requirements

GCSEs at Grade D or 3 or above including English, mathematics and science or equivalent.

  Work Experience

There is a requirement to carry out 150 hours of work experience as part of this course.


To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:

· One externally set, externally moderated assignment

· One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under exam conditions

· One externally set, internally marked Health and Safety assignment


Once you have successfully completed this qualification, you could go on to study a Level 3 College-based qualification taken over one year or two years.

Award In Tree Climbing & Rescue

Level 2 • Part-time • Bicton College, Honors Flowers

This training course is intended for those involved in tree climbing operations and leads to the NPTC Certificate of Competence to Climb Trees and Perform Aerial rescue. It does not involve use of a chainsaw, but covers the minimum requirement for a ground person working with a climber in arboriculture. As aerial rescue is obligatory, those attending should have a ‘head for heights’. Training takes place over the first 5 days with assessment on Day 6. On this course you will identify functions and fitting of specialist equipment, use and tying of specialist knots, pre-climbing equipment checks; identification of hazards such as overhead cables, role of the climber and of the ground person, secure working position, climbing techniques, branch walking, use of supplementary anchor points, storage of equipment and regulations (LOLER, PUWER). City and Guilds Practical Horticulture Skills

Focussing upon the fundamental practical skills in horticulture, the learner will be able to learn skills such as planting out, preparing ground, plant maintenance techniques. An Award in Practical Horticulture Skills is for adult learners (19+) and adults getting started in the horticulture industry. Or you might be working in a horticulture job and want to improve your skills. You don't need any previous experience or a current work placement. This level will suit you if you've developed a real interest in Horticulture and want to either progress into work, progress from Level 1 to other related horticulture qualifications, or if you have a passion for learning more about horticulture and developing your skills and knowledge further. The qualification is taken as part-time learning from Dartington.
