This course will guide you to either learn about, or improve your plaiting and show preparation skills.

Getting that perfect competition look is an art form and is all a part of the competition experience. We all want to be proud of our skills and our ability to make the horse look its best, this takes practice and to do it well, you need to understand the basics.

This course will help you to learn how to create a polished look and will give you hints and tips on what the pro's do to perfect your skills.

This course will run from 09:30-16:00

Please note: this course is suitable for applicants aged 19+

I studied Equine Studies and now work as a mounted police officer for Avon and Somerset Police. Having joined Devon and Cornwall Police in 2007 as a police officer, I pursued my ambition to become a mounted police officer in 2015 with Avon & Somerset Police. Equine is very much worth doing if you want to work with horses, it is a good course to help you expand your knowledge and improve your riding ability. You will thoroughly enjoy it if you want a practical hands on course.

Equine Groom Apprenticeship Level 2

Level 2 • Work-based • Bicton College

In order to start your apprenticeship in horse care you will need to join the Level 2 course and learn the basic skills needed to progress on to Level 3. Apprenticeships allow you to work while gaining a nationally recognised qualification at the same time, so why not combine your love of horses with earning money? Over the course of 15-18 months, you will be working in paid employment within the equine industry and you will spend one day every two weeks during term time at college. You’ll study a wide range of subjects around the care of all different types of horses. If you ride or do not ride, don’t worry – there are specialised routes that you can take which include riding, non-riding, racing, breeding or driving. Both Bicton College and Duchy Stoke Climsland capuses are located in beautiful countryside and provide dedicated equestrian facilities, which include indoor and outdoor schools and working yards. Here you will have the opportunity to practice your skills in preparation for the end point practical assessments. Expect to spend time away from your employer on Day release with practical and theory delivery helping you to prepare for your EPA (End Point assessment) with the support of your work coach. Assignments will also be set as well as various classroom activities, workshops and tasks to help you gain the skills and knowledge needed alongside support and training from your employer in order to prepare you for a career in the equine industry. Remote and Blended delivery – If you live too far away from the college to attend college each week then we can arrange for you to go onto a remote programme of delivery and assessment with more one to one support by your work coach and assessor. An Introduction to Equine Behaviour

This course is suitable for horse owners wishing to learn about horse behaviour and how to apply that knowledge in practice. Throughout this course, students will learn how to recognise different behaviours in horses and how they can impact the horse-human relationship. Often horse owners miscommunicate with horses, keeping instructions clear is important to avoid conflict and cause fear or unwanted behaviours. We will explore the underlying causes of behavioural issues and how we may resolve them. Please ensure that you come wearing suitable clothing and yard footwear. This course will run from 09:30-16:30 Please note: this course is suitable for applicants aged 19+

Award in Horse Care

Level 1 • Part-time • Bicton College

Our Level 1 Practical Horse Skills for Adult Learners (19+) course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to turn your passion into a career. You will: • Develop your practical horse care skills • Learn how to work safely, effectively and efficiently in the equine workplace • Gain confidence in applying for roles within the industry The course provides the students with an insight on how to care for horses: this will include basic horse-care skills such as grooming, feeding and rugging, and day-to-day care of the horse. This course runs for 20 weeks on Wednesdays - 9:30am to 12.30pm - from 12th January 2022 *Please note - those in receipt of JSA, ESA or Universal Credit benefits may be elibible for free tuition - please contact us for further details/ to check eligibility
