So you want an adventurous job working outdoors, solving problems and perhaps climbing trees or working with chainsaws. Perhaps Forestry and Arboriculture would work for you? The first thing you’ll notice about the course is that you will be learning both how to do the work and the reasons behind why it should be done that way. You can expect to spend one third of your time developing practical skills and two thirds on learning the theory and science. You will be thinking about trees from planting tiny whips to the biggest in the forest. You’ll be learning about how trees grow, what their needs are and how we manage them to benefit the wild environment, forests, woodlands, towns and gardens. You can expect to learn the practical skills of chainsaw work and felling trees, how to assess the risk of trees failing and the trees relationship with fungi and other pests and disease. For many arborists climbing is a skill used every day and you can develop the skills to climb safely in the biggest trees for the purposes of inspection, pruning or removal. In our workshop and store we have a wide range of professional equipment including modern professional quality chainsaws, climbing equipment with which you can learn a wide range technique, a commercial chipper and stump grinder. Infact everything we need for you to develop the set of skills that you need to make a strong contribution when you start in the industry. You’ll be learning from professionals with experience across the industry who are there to give you the very best start to your career.

Christmas door wreath and table arrangement workshop

Join our floristry tutors Denise Cross and Lucy Somerville in the beautiful grounds of Bicton College for a workshop to make a beautiful Christmas wreath to hang on your door and a lovely table arrangement (with optional Candles) to decorate your table for the festive season. The tutors will share expert tips to help you create an attractive wreath using lots of lovely evergreen foliage and fresh moss along with scented cinnamon sticks, fir cones and orange slices. The tuition is free , however materials will be available to purchase to complete the 2 designs at a cost of £15 (Payable on the day) but you may wish to bring some of your own decorations, garden foliage etcetera to personalise your designs.

City & Guilds Practical Horticulture skills – Grow Your Own (Dartington)

This Level 1 course will take place at School Farm, on the beautiful Dartington estate near Totnes, Devon. It is a great introduction for those who want to grow on any scale, whether it is a small patio garden, an allotment or on a larger piece of land. The School Farm site hosts a range of enterprises from vegetable growers to therapeutic horticulture and the course will be delivered by experienced growers and teachers from the enterprises. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in or some experience of gardening or plant knowledge, and can be enjoyed by enthusiastic beginners and more experienced gardeners alike. Students can expect 1 day a week of practical learning on the land in different seasons and weather conditions.
