Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants

This Level 2 City and Guilds Certificate course is for adult learners wishing to gain essential skills in dog grooming and bathing, in preparation for the Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming.

It will not give you the qualifications required to work as a professional groomer, but it will give you the experience and skills necessary to progress to Level 3.

*Fees apply, please discuss course cost at interview.

What you will learn

You will have the opportunity to spend time working within the Dog Grooming Units on our campuses. Here you can practice your skills in bathing and preparing a range of dogs with different coat types for the grooming process and you will also learn some essential trimming techniques. You will learn the underpinning theory, and assessment is via the completion of written assignments and practical assessments.

The course covers the following units:

Mandatory

Unit 1: Prepare and groom dogs prior to bathing

Unit 2: Bathe and clean dogs

Unit 3: Clean and maintain equipment used for grooming or removing hair from animals

Unit 4: Control and restrain animals

Unit 5: Dry dogs and prepare their coats for styling

Unit 6: Essential Trimming of a dog’s coat

Plus pre-set options from:

Unit 7: Carry out reception duties

Unit 8: Handle payments from clients

Unit 9: Welcome, receive and care for visitors

Unit 10: Move animals between locations

Unit 11: Maintain the cleanliness and bio security of the animal care working environment

Entry requirements

To be 19 years old or above.

It would be advantageous to be working within the dog grooming industry (as a volunteer or in paid employment) but this isn't essential. You will need to have a good level of literacy to enable you to complete the assignment work.

Assessment

Assessment will be a mix of practical assessments, written assignments and in-class tests, plus an externally set online exam.

Progression

The Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants will give you the knowledge and skills to work as a grooming assistant within the grooming industry.

If you wish to work as a professional dog groomer, you would need to progress onto the nationally-recognised Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming. This would be in addition to a substantial amount of practical experience in the industry to enable you to pass the practical assessments.

The Level 3 Diploma gives you tuition and experience in hand-stripping and also styling and trimming of a whole range of dog breeds and, again, it is strongly recommended that time is spent in industry to further practice and develop the skills for dog grooming.
