FdSc Equitation, Training & Behaviour

This programme has been designed for anyone who is interested in the training, behaviour and welfare of horses used for a wide range of purposes, from leisure to international competition. Delivery by a team of experienced professionals with established research in biomechanics, behaviour, psychology and the horse-human relationship, ensures that content is contemporary and encompasses recent advances within industry, whilst allowing exploration of traditional, established and emerging equestrian disciplines alike. Applicants should be interested in investigating all aspects of equitation through objective scientific research to support the horse within all aspects of horse-human interactions. We encourage you to develop your individual abilities and test factual knowledge through a variety of assessment methods including posters, leaflets, practical demonstrations and some written work.

This programme will enable you to justify the use of horses for a range of purposes within the industry in which you will be employed. You will gain a detailed understanding of underpinning biology and psychology to support and develop an understanding of the complexities of working with horses. This is through a mixture of taught and practical sessions which are integral to the programme. Riding is offered within the practical day at the on-site Equestrian Centre which is managed by an experienced equitation science postgraduate with many years of industry experience. In addition your personal and professional skills are developed through work-related learning in industry, which is part of the course. There are study tours in both the first and second years to enhance and consolidate your experience which requires an additional financial contribution from each student.

This course is also available with Science Gateway, perfect for you if you would like to study any of the science-based Foundation Degrees (FdSc) we offer, but don’t have the right qualifications or grades to do so.
