This programme provides an exciting route to a career in the food manufacturing industry. Students also use it as a stepping stone to a career in teaching food technology.
During the programme you will get practical experience using the state-of-the-art processing facilities in the Food Innovation Centre. This facility is used to conduct practical activities which link theory with industrial processes. During Year 1 you will look at safe food production from raw materials to end product and also study the science behind the technology. Additionally you will investigate the food industry and its associated issues from producer to consumer, along with food business management and personal development and employability skills.
This is followed, in Year 2, by investigation of food processing technologies and the development of new food products. Food safety and quality are core themes and the concepts and processes behind these are studied. Nutrition and food science are studied throughout the programme.
Assessment is continuous for each module and is made up of a variety of methods which may include practical reports, essays, case studies, presentations, in-class tests and portfolios. You will sit two exams in your final year. The programme includes a wide variety of visits to food processing facilities and retail outlets. These study visits are used to support college-based learning. You are encouraged to undertake a work placement activity, allowing you to reflect on the application of theory in practice.
Graduates have a high record of employability, with 100% of students either progressing to BSc (Hons) or starting a career in the food industry.

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required. Access to HE Diplomas - 45 credits at level 3. Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English Language and mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.
